Are you going to Malta and because of your special diet, you care what and where you eat? Do you follow a gluten-free, sugar-free, lactose-free or other allergen-free diet, which requires you to pay close attention to your diet during your trip?
No matter how hard I look, it's simply difficult for me to find those traditional Maltese dishes, which, like Greece or Spain, would fit quite well into some diets. Maltese cuisine uses quite a lot of pasta - sweet and savory - prepared in various variations, which cannot even be called diet-friendly with my greatest goodwill.
Maltese kitchen sweets
Maltese cuisine offers countless local pastries, but unfortunately none of them are diet-friendly.
Rabbit food
Almost all restaurants are tempted by Malta's national dish, which, unless you are a vegetarian, can easily be included in a diet when prepared as a stew. When opening, it is worth putting more emphasis on the side dish, and be prepared that it will not be easy to order a reform side dish for the rabbit, apart from the salad. But good luck if you find something on the menu for you. A rabbit cannot be missing from the Maltese table.
Kapunata
Think of it as a Maltese soup, which also includes the finest Maltese vegetables. A Maltese dish, which is also a vegetarian specialty, could not be more diet-friendly without bread.
Ricotta
Overall, there are no problems with traditional Maltese ricotta. If you are not lactose intolerant or allergic to milk in any form, you can also try Maltese curd with your own ingredients suitable for your diet, e.g. your own bread. Ricotta is a healthy alternative.
Antipasto
Although it is considered a main course, this Maltese dish reminds me more of an appetizer, consisting of nothing more than Maltese sausage, eggplant, vegetables, and the unmissable Maltese olive.
Seafood
Seafood, which can be used in all Mediterranean countries, cannot be left out of the main courses in Malta either. It's a shame that I'm the only one who can't make a deeper friendship with these foods. In the case of Malta, most of the menus are full of fish and other seafood specialities, which easily fit into most diets.
